Resurrection in the OT

  • To understand the OT prophecies about the resurrection of the Christ, you must first have a biblical theology of restoration of life or of death to life
  • The OT references to restored life point to the apex or fulfillment of it in the Holy One, Jesus
    • In Jesus is all the blessings and promises to Israel fulfilled and kept
  • Jesus death was the payment for our sin and His resurrection is the receipt

      • Jesus was swallowed up by something much larger

    • In Jewish reckoning a day was counted as any part of a day
      • Three days and three nights should not be interpreted like we are in the days of “hotel stays.” Jesus saying days and nights is to give more detail while describing a day.
        • Jesus was not talking about staying at a Holiday Inn or on a Cruise 
        • In the Jewish culture, a partial day was counted as a whole day. 
          • Sabbath day is Saturday, but it ends at around 6pm on Saturday 
      • The Jews knew Jesus meant three days, because they also assigned guards to watch the tomb for those three days
